The Food

Food reflects much of a region’s culture and way of living and thus, is an important component of traveling. In many cases, a specific culture can be identified based on one dish! Sushi, for example, instantly brings to mind the Japanese. Food around the world differs so much; you would think that, with the limited number of edible, healthy plants and animals, there would only be so many ways to prepare them. This is not so, however; the sheer amount of unique global cuisine boggles the mind!

In my travels I try to indulge as much as possible in the local menus - I’ll purposely avoid tourist restaurants (where they aim to serve watered-down versions of cultural food, or even food that is recognized internationally as fast food) and follow a pack of native-speakers when dinner time rolls around. I hope that my recounts will help you (and your stomach) out in the future; for example, while jelly made of duck’s blood and rice may sound unappetizing to you, it is a common dish found in some Asian countries. Here I’ll comment, recommend, and let you know what to avoid in Tanzania… or even Quebec.
