The Language

When traveling internationally, one of the biggest concerns people have is being able to communicate. We are naturally very sociable creatures, and in modern society, it is necessary to communicate if you want to survive. However, foreign languages are notoriously hard to learn, especially given a time limit. Luckily for English-speaking travelers, residents of most foreign countries know a little English, enough to point you to the nearest restroom, at least. In many countries, in fact, English is one of the most commonly taught second languages; this can add a sense of security to your travels. However, there is still an inability, and this inability to communicate does tend to make for some very captivating, sometimes hilarious stories.

Being bilingual already, I find the shift in language between countries and cultures more than just interesting; I find it fascinating. Here are some stories of language, slips of the tongue, and misunderstandings of linguistic ramblings, as well as advice on teaching or learning a new language in a foreign country.
