Countries Producing The World’s Most Diamonds

by Greg on May 19, 2009

Diamonds are often called “a girl’s best friend,” but they are also considered to be one of the most beautiful and rare gems in the entire world. It is difficult to find diamonds in the natural world, diamond earrings don’t grow on trees, so countries that come across diamond fields are considered to be very lucky and can definitely take advantage of producing this gorgeous mineral. While diamonds can be found in small quantities in a decent number of places around the globe, only a handful of countries can truly say that they are capable of producing the world’s most diamonds.

Far and away the most famous country for producing the world’s diamonds is the nation of South Africa. Located on the southern tip of this large continent, South Africa first really began producing these rare gems way back in the year 1869. Since that time, production has increased steadily and many diamonds that can be found in today’s department stores and jewelry stores are likely to trace their origins to somewhere in South Africa. Nearly 4.5 billion carats have been mined in this large country, alone; a truly incredible number.

Another one of the highest diamond producing countries in the world is Botswana. This is the northern neighbor of South Africa, so it does make sense, geographically, that Botswana should also have a large number of diamond fields. In fact, much of the economy of Botswana revolves around its diamond production. The government of Botswana actually owns a huge portion of the largest diamond mining company in this country, and the boom of diamond production has drastically changed the economy of Botswana for the better. Many millions of carats of diamonds have been mined in this relatively small country.

Outside of the continent of Africa, there is one major country that produces a huge number of the world’s diamonds. Russia accounts for close to 21% of the entire world’s diamond production. Most of the diamond mining in this country is done just below the Arctic Circle, in the large area known as Siberia. Perhaps the most famous and well known diamond mine in Russia is the Mirna Mine. This freezing cold place is the deepest open pit diamond mine in the entire world; it goes down to an incredible depth of over 2,000 feet. Mining here only began a relatively short time ago, back in the 1950s. However, since then this mining area has accounted for the majority of the diamonds found in Russia. Despite its incredibly inclement location, Mirna has a steady population of people, thanks to this highly productive diamond mine.
