Experience Lanzarote – The Island of Fire

by Greg on October 1, 2009

Lanzarote is located in the Canaries – the group of seven Spanish owned islands located in the atlantic, just off the coast of Africa.  Boasting year round sunshine, some unique visitor attractions and a host of good quality holiday accommodation.

Lanzarote was first conquered by the Spanish crown in the 1400´s – serving as the spring board for the invasion of the other islands.  Before emerging as an important strategic trading post between the New World and the Old, as Spain went on to conquer large swathes of central and South America.

Today the Canaries are best known for tourism – and rightly so.  As the islands are the second most visited destination in the whole of Spain after Catalonia.  With the bulk of accommodation in Lanzarote available in the three main resorts of Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca.

Lanzarote is probably most famous for its volcanoes – created during a series of eruptions in the 18th and 19th centuries.  Which rocked the island and covered much of the south in a sea of lava.  This region is now the most popular visitor attraction on Lanzarote – and has also served as the location for a number of science fiction films such as One Million Years BC.

Getting There
Lanzarote has just the one international airport at Arrecife and is around four hours flying time from the UK.  Flights to Lanzarote are available with all of the main low cost airlines – such as Ryanair and easyJet.  With returns starting at about €150.

Places To Stay
Luxury hotels, beautiful villas, budget apartments.  Lanzarote has a wide range of options for anyone planning a holiday on the island.
The demand for self-catering accommodation has grown markedly over the last five years – in tandem with the growth of internet usage.  As more and more people dispense with the services of travel agents to book their own holidays direct online instead.

As a result Lanzarote villas and apartments are now a very popular option – especially with British holidaymakers who tend to favour the newest resort on the island – Playa Blanca.

Getting Around
Anyone planning to explore Lanzarote is best advised to hire a car.  As local bus services are infrequent and don’t service many of the main island attractions.  Rental rates are affordable too – starting at just €15 per day.  Whilst petrol currently costs around 0.70 centimos for a litre of unleaded.
