Famous Art Galleries Around The World

by Greg on May 12, 2009

Whether you are a student of history, or simply enjoy learning about different kinds and styles of art,  visiting art galleries can be a fun and educational way to learn more about the world and its many cultures. In nearly any decent-sized city that you may travel to, you are sure to come across at least one art gallery that will grab your interest and make you ever more curious about the different kinds of art in the world. Art galleries come in all shapes and sizes; some are dedicated to just one particular era or artist, while others are vast and encompass a huge array of time periods and masters. For simplicity’s sake, though, I would like to highlight a couple of the most famous art galleries in the world.

lourve

Perhaps the most famous and most referenced art gallery in the world is the Louvre of Paris, France. Even if you know relatively little about art, you don’t need a language translator to enjoy the art in this amazing Parisian institution. It is located right on the Seine, and houses over 35,000 incredible pieces of art, spanning a vast length of history going all the way back to the 6,000 years, BC. The Louvre is famously home to the iconic da Vinci work, Mona Lisa. Simply being able to see this very recognizable painting in person is reason enough to spend time at the Louvre. In reality, though, I’ve discovered that one could easily spend weeks in this place, and still only see a small fraction of it.

moma
Another one of the most famous art galleries in the world is definitely New York City’s Museum of Modern Art. This vast building is located in midtown Manhattan and is a must see for anyone who comes to New York City. Mainly comprised of works of modern and contemporary art, the MoMA (as it is often referred) includes masterpieces by artists such as Vincent Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali and Frida Kahlo among its more than 150,000 different offerings. Indeed, the Museum of Modern Art is definitely one of the most famous in the world, and is an unforgettable place to spend time and learn more about a vast array of fascinating work.

uffizi
Located in Florence, Italy, the Uffizi Gallery is another notable art museum, and one of the oldest in the entire world. This eclectic place features some of the most recognizable and incredible works of art that can be found anywhere. By roaming its many halls and rooms, you can enjoy works of art by such masters as Sandro Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael and Titian. Indeed, anyone who has ever studied even a little bit of art history is sure to be amazed by the art on display in the Uffizi’s many exhibits. I consider this museum to be the highlight of any trip to Florence; if you are lucky enough to come to this great city, make sure you check it out.
