Famous Skateboard Parks Around the World

Are you looking for somewhere to perfect your Ollie? Maybe you want to work on your grinding or learn how to do a kickflip? English, anyone? If you don’t know what any of these things are, then you probably wouldn’t be interested in where the best and most famous skateboard parks around the world are. But, if you have a teenager, particularly a teenage boy, particularly a teenage boy with a closet full of wesc gear, they just might be interested to know.

Skateboarding actually began sometime between the 1940’s and the 1960’s. California surfers found themselves bored when there were no waves to surf, so they began surfing planks of wood with roller skates attached to the bottoms. Thus, the skateboard was born. The first commercial skateboards were actually sold by a surfboard shop. Skateboarding has seen rises and declines in popularity each decade since. Today, skateboarding is a way of life for many. It is a sport, a form of entertainment and great exercise. Here are some great places to skate.

The Flow is an indoor skatepark located in Columbus, Ohio. At 50,000 square feet, The Flow is one of the largest skateboard parks in the United States. This park plays host to many famous skaters and exciting competitions. Kids under 18 will need to be accompanied by an adult.

Millennium Park in Calgary, Alberta, Canada is one of the world’s largest outdoor skateparks. It boasts sections for all levels of skaters. The advanced course includes a fullpipe and cloverleaf bowl. The Calgary International Reggae festival is also held at Millennium Park.

Harrow Skatepark in Harrow, England is a rare working skatepark remaining from the 70’s skating craze. The park is completely free and enjoyed by many U.K. skaters each day. This famous skatepark was threatened with closure in 2007 until protestors and the skating community deemed the park irreplaceable and the closure was halted.

Burnside Skatepark is located in Portland, Oregon. This rebel park was originally built without the consent of the city. Eventually, the city did give its blessing. This park has been made famous by being depicted in the video games Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3. This park was also featured in a movie titled Paranoid Park in 2007.

SMP Skatepark in Shanghai, China is a huge outdoor skatepark and is the largest in the country. There is a 12,300 viewing area to watch all the action. This park hosts an annual competition called The Showdown, where competitors from all over the world compete and show off their skills.

So if you are ready to do some shredding, any of these places would be the perfect place to do so. With skateboarding becoming such a popular sport and pastime, you are sure to find a decent skatepark no matter where you are traveling.
