Lac- Saint- Jean, Quebec is one of the most scenic and pretty places on Earth. How do I know? It’s my hometown, and a place where I love to be outside and back-packing. Nothing like putting on the old skate shoes and hitting the skatepark. It is the hidden gem of the Province of Quebec, Canada.
All of Quebec is an outdoor wonderland, and the region of Saguenay- Lac- Saint- Jean is a picture postcard everywhere I turn. The forests rise up spectacular mountains and hills which are framed by royal blue skies. So bring your old kite to the kite repair shop and start running! In the winter, dark green furs dot the gleaming white powdery snow banks.
As far as scenery goes, you also can’t miss beautiful Mont Tremblant, a popular tourist destination with great ski hills and a fun town with much to do. I personally don’t like going in the spring when the trails are too muddy, but summer and winter are great.
The Saguenay River flows through the whole area, irrigating the fields in the summer and forming silvery ice chunks in the winter. Rich, dark brown, fertile land lies alongside the river banks. Wild flowers, with hues and tints of red, lavender, yellow and blue grow as far as the eye can see starting in June.
One of my special places for picnicking and relaxing is the Saguenay Fjord, a natural and serene estuary formed by the overflowing waters of the Saguenay River. Sitting there in the tall grasses of the summer, I connect with nature and everything that’s going on in a setting hearkening back to when only Indian tribes inhabited Quebec.
The capital city of Quebec Province is Quebec City. It is well worth making the trip to the area where the St. Lawrence River in all its majesty narrows.
Visit the National Museum of Fine Arts and The Museum of Civilization, and experience all of the triumphal creativity and imagination of the Canadian people.
A number of months during the year, the National Assembly of Quebec is in session, and you can sit in the gallery and watch the provincial parliament in action, with its fierce debates amongst opposing political parties.
Quebec City is one of the oldest cities in North America, and Old Quebec is surrounded by the only remaining fortified walls north of Mexico in the Americas.
I like to walk through the city and explore the history of the sidewalks and the old buildings, the back alleys and the narrow lanes.
Probably the most well known city in Quebec is Montreal, the town built on an island with its very own mountain lookout, Mont Royal.
Montreal flourishes all year long. To the west of town, about 40km, is the resort of La Piniere, a Mecca for cross country skiing, skating, tobogganing, and snow shoeing.
The world’s funniest comedians make their way to Montreal in the summer for the Just for Laughs Comedy festival, which follows the acclaimed International Jazz Festival.
Montreal has a clean and safe subway system and an underground city full of retail shops and restaurants.
One of the best places to visit is the Basilica of Notre Dame in Old Montreal. The wood carvings are amongst the best in North America and the ceiling is painted a deep blue with gold stars. You will be entranced when you look up.
The Art Deco building style is found at the University of Montreal’s main building, and at the Aldred Building. Various examples of gothic revival architecture are scattered throughout the city.
At night, journey to Crescent Street and St. Laurent Boulevard for some of the best jazz, pop, rock and classical music found this side of Memphis.
I love Quebec and I love living here. You’ll love it too!
