Are you thinking about taking a trip through your home country or going overseas for a couple of months or a few weeks? You want to take your kids with you to let them see the world and get some knowledge, but you also want some private time by yourself or with your spouse or companion and you need someone to take care of the children. How do you go about hiring a traveling nanny?

Agencies abound on the Internet offering to find you the nanny who matches your family and its needs. You can try posting an ad on the web, but you will need spam blockers to protect your inbox and you’ll have to do the background checks and screening that an agency can do for you. An agency typically charges about ten percent of the agreed upon salary or a flat fee, but it can be well worth it to get a dependable and stable person.
If you are going to travel outside the country you need a nanny who has a passport, has signed a waiver, or who qualifies for a travel visa if you plan on staying more than a few weeks. It’s helpful if the nanny has a driver’s license which is recognized in the country you will be touring. Make sure that the person has no type of criminal background which in many instances will preclude entry into many countries who check.
Once contact is made with the prospective hire, the ground rules need to be laid out very specifically. The number of hours per week that she will be working needs to be established. Will she be required to do laundry or errands on the trip? Who will be packing the kids’ bags?
The nanny obviously needs time to sleep, personal time, and some free traveling time of her own. Maybe the nanny can spend time with your children five nights a week and have two completely to herself, with a return- time to duty around eight the next morning.
Most nannies are expecting to have their travel expenses paid, which include any air fair, buses, trains or other ground transportation. In addition to that, a salary of fifty to two hundred dollars a day is generally paid. You want to make sure your au pair is happy, content, that she can afford women’s health care, and she needs spending money to see the sights and be independent.
Even if it means an interview over the phone or through tele-conferencing with a video screen, you need to determine the person’s experience handling children your kids’ ages, her work hour flexibility, and her passion for the position. The prospective hire needs to meet your children in person or at the least talk to them over the phone. It is very important to see if your nanny is going to be able to develop chemistry with your kids.
Make it clear that taxes will have to be paid and taken out of her salary through the rules and guidelines of your home country. In the United States, that means your paying half of the required Medicare and Social Security.
Be clear on your specific expectations. When traveling, you are going to expect the nanny to work with you, keeping the kids entertained and exploring the sights. Go over the types of discipline that can be used to keep your kids in line. She will be eating with your family and you may want her monitoring the children’s behaviour at the table. At night, when you want to enjoy the local nightspots and look across the candlelight into your significant other’s eyes, the nanny needs to be back at the hotel, getting the kids bathed and ready for bed.
You need to be happy on your trip and so do your children and your nanny. Happiness creates a great working relationship with your nanny and maybe the possibility of a full time position. It’s a lot easier when you clear everything up at the beginning and everybody knows the rules.
