When going away for an extended period of time there is a lot more to think about than throwing a few things in a bag. For starters, you must not only pack, but make sure you take care of your home and your pets if you have any. With identity theft being a big worry taking care of your mail is very important and making sure there is a method put in place to take care of those newspapers that seem to mysteriously show up in your driveway. Not to mention your regular paper.

Have the post office hold your mail, make sure you have your Newspapers held or stopped all together. Having them held is fine but you don’t want to announce to the whole world “I am not going to be home.” Be sure to place timers on your lights, and make certain your alarm system is in tact. It helps to place a lot of your extremely valuables in storage while you’re away. Visiting Gatineau Storage can greatly help you hide away the possessions you’d rather not leave in the house.
There has got to be at least one neighbour you trust to notice the house or a relative. You don’t want anyone moving your furniture while you are not there and having the neighbours just stand there and watch. Take your pet to the kennel and make sure your pet is familiar with the surroundings; pets can be affected by you being away. Many places allow pets now, so do your research.
Make sure you pack your basic stuff. You really don’t want to be caught traveling trying to buy toothpaste, shampoo, or deodorant. It always amazes me how expensive hand lotion gets when you are traveling. There is the exception, if you are traveling by plane. In that case you might want to wait. Get online, there are a lot of familiar stores near wherever you travel, and shopping at them keeps you from feeling so far away from home, after a while you will be acting like a native. Be careful when shopping online, and be sure to avoid unwanted emails by using anti spam software to protect your inbox.
Take care of any medical supplies you may need. If you need inhalers, insulin, or whatever, make sure you have taken care of these things before you leave. Always carry an extra supply of medicine; you never know what might happen. Keep emergency medicine on your person at all times and make sure you check the laws if you are traveling to another country.
I love to wear men’s streetwear clothing which includes pants with lots of pockets, they are great for things you might have to carry, and you want to be careful not to lay things around, you may forget to pick them up. Pack light make sure your outfits are interchangeable, and don’t be afraid to be creative. You would be surprised how nice a swimsuit looks with slacks or a skirt. Most people come back with more things than they left with so try and imagine how many T shirts you will buy while you are traveling and leave a lot of the extra weight at home. Take the time to do a little climate research before you leave if you are not familiar with your destination. It is not very comfortable to leave one part of the world in shorts, arrive at your destination and discover you need an over coat.
