Jewelry has been a part of many cultures since the beginning of time. In the past, decorating oneself with ornate metals and stones has been a traditional way to show signs of wealth and social dominance. Actually, one look at a Hollywood red carpet and you may find this tradition is still alive today! It is interesting though how jewelry from around the world has found its way into mainstream American culture.
Some of the earliest jewelry came from the ancient Egyptians. Gold was the metal of choice, as it was very malleable and easily manipulated and formed into many types of decorations. Bracelets, earrings, necklaces and arm bands were quite commonly worn by Egyptian royalty. Today, gold is still one of the most common metals used in making jewelry.
India has some of the most fascinating jewelry. New age designs mixed with ancient world tradition make their jewelry some of the most sought after today. In India jewelry has always been a very important part of their culture, with deep roots in wedding traditions and other significant ceremonies. The jewelry traditions in India are regional, with different states producing diverse jewelry selections. The most ornamental and intricate designs may come from the north, while east India is more known for its beaded pieces.
African and Tibetan jewelry is often a medium for expressing religious beliefs. In Tibet, many folks wear their gems as a means of protection and a way to get closer to their gods. Along with gold and silver, they also use copper to make their jewelry. They pair these precious metals with rare gemstones to create pendants of sacred religious symbols.
Many associate pearls with Asia, but it is not know exactly which culture began wearing pearls first. It is true that for over 5,000 years, Chinese royalty adorned their crowns with pearls. As you look through history though, you will see other cultures coveting pearls and relishing them above all other gems. Natural pearls are still very rare, therefore still fairly expensive. In the early 1900’s however, cultivated pearls were invented, making pearl ownership a much more attainable goal.
Britain is fast becoming one of the trendsetters in jewelry design. The demand for high end jewelry has grown over the years. Gold and silver are the choice metals, with large ornate designs on pendants and pins. Expensive watches are also very popular among the British.
No matter where your travels take you, you are sure to find some interesting jewelry discoveries. If you find a piece that grabs your attention, ask about it. More times than not, there is an interesting story behind it!
