There are many successful singers in the United States today who got their start in another country. All genres of music have seen international singers. Some sing in their native language, while many sing in English. Some even sing songs with a combination of the two. Some international singers who have made it big in North America are listed below.
Julio Iglesias is a singer who was born in Madrid, Spain. Julio has sold over 300 million albums. He has recorded 77 albums in 14 different languages. Sony has labeled him as one of the top ten best selling music artists of all time. One of Julio’s most successful songs was a duet he performed with country artist Willie Nelson called, “To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before”.
Julio’s son Enrique Iglesias has followed in his father’s footsteps and soon become a favorite singer with North Americans. Enrique has sold over 60 million records and has had two Billboard number one hits.
Shakira is a singer and entertainer from Columbia, who broke into the English speaking North America in the early 2000’s. From dance clubs in the U.S. to Disney cruise line ships, her blends of Latin flair and belly-dancing dance techniques have made her music a popular staple. Shakira was the first South American to be awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Paul David Hewson is a famous and well loved singer in North America. Never heard of him? You probably know him by his stage name, Bono. The lead singer of the Grammy award winning band U2 was born in Dublin, Ireland. Bono writes nearly all of the lyrics to U2’s songs. Many of his songs reflect political or social subjects. In 2005 Bono and U2 were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Of course, no list of successful international singers would be complete without two very iconic bands; The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. Both bands hale from England where they began with humble beginnings. During the British Invasion of the 1960’s, both bands came to the U.S. and found great success. The Rolling Stones were ranked number four in Rolling Stone Magazine’s list of 100 greatest artists of all time. Can you guess who was number one on that list? Yes, it was The Beatles.
Great singers and performers can be found all over the world. That small local band of guys with shaggy hair playing at the local pub across the ocean just may someday change the entertainment world forever.
