Travel to Japan

TGS

The Tokyo Game Show (TGS) is an event like no other, so, it was of course with great anticipation that I prepared for the show. Covering conventions and getting interviews is one aspect of it. But living out of my luggage, well… that is a year round affair for me. Doing trade show circuits and reviewing them, among other things, doesn’t always leave time to enjoy the cities that host the events.

Tokyo and Japan present alternate realities; a hyper-realized world of technology with an underpinning of traditions. Not to oversimplify, but Tokyo truly is like no other place on earth.

HIGHLIGHTS TO SEE

Taking time off from the show, I made sure to have a few days prior to ensure I would have the energy to see things I had missed on previous trips. Preparing a list of places with available tours was a place to start. I was sure I wanted to visit a fair number of places on my own. I have a working knowledge of Japanese, and there is a surprising amount of English available as well.

If you can prepare for a trip to Tokyo with a basic knowledge of Japanese as well as the katakana script you can expect to be able to find your way around Tokyo.

Visiting anywhere, at one time of the year versus another, dictates just what kind of events you can expect to find available.

Doing an anime tour was something I hadn’t considered until a friend of mine suggested it. So, with a healthy music mix of my favorite anime soundtracks, I ventured out to seek the anime of Tokyo. I made sure to visit some particular sights, with still images to accompany me in my appreciation. Watching the cars and people can actually make traffic a thing of wonder. Seeing the ebb and flow of Tokyo traffic with the soundtrack for Ghost in the Shell in the background was truly a unique moment in my experience.

This is one of many adventures that I sought out, in my time off in this incredible city.

I have to admit, that a big part of my adventure was roadside vendors and food stalls. Getting sushi on-the-go was also a real treat. Experiencing a city through its food is really a tasty gastronomic journey. You can see the color of a city in its food.
