The Top 5 Countries that Consume the Most Paper

by Greg on March 13, 2009

Sitting at the top of the list of countries that consume the most paper is the United States, followed by Canada, Western Europe, Australia and China. These countries also entertain the largest populations of developed nations, and entertain a consumer culture that uses a lot of packaging. Packaging is manufactured by the pulp and paper industry and even as these countries have an ever increasing appetite for more stuff, they are looking for ways to decrease paper consumption.

With China’s population growing past the one billion mark in the next few years, they are poised to become the largest consumers of paper products. Even as the majority of the country still lives in an undeveloped lifestyle, the population centers are consuming more and creating tons of waste tonnage. As the country cycles through economic cycles to reach modern convenience, China consumerism threatens to overwhelm the environment. This provides new opportunities for paper equipment companies with surplus mechanical equipment to open new markets for recycling. China truly represents a new frontier and a new school of thought for paper products.

The United States and Canada have very vocal environmental groups who would tie in American consumerism with the end of the world. Consumerism will change the world, but probably won’t destroy it. The US environmental groups need to develop a stronger marketing angle that reaches the audience in a better way. The global warming agenda took on a whole new life when former Vice President Al Gore took on the issue with his movie, despite disputable facts. Groups that want to revamp consumer product packaging need to convince consumers that different methods need to be deployed. Paper product companies employing hosted exchange services can get ahead of the demand, and corner the market on recycled material converted into new products in a new way.

Australia and Western Europe’s push toward recycling may not take them off the top 5 list, although as India develops out of third world status and establishes its place as a global economy to be reckoned with, the two countries may find themselves falling on the list. In an industry that is very reactive to environmental concerns, companies need to look to developing nations and create a proactive approach to consumer paper use and reuse.

Research and Development dollars need to go into rebuilt pulp and paper equipment and discovering new sources of inexpensive renewable resources for paper fiber. The top 5 countries who consume the most paper are also the most developed and need to implement measures to insure the industries that provide paper products are also preserving the environment that provides them.
