Tips For Student Travel

by Greg on June 2, 2009

There are always so many horror stories in the news about student travel; it would seem that it might be one of the most dangerous things that a young person can do. However, if you keep some simple tips in mind, you can safely travel as a student and have an enjoyable and education experience that you will not soon forget. Common sense can definitely go a long way when it comes to student travel.

One of the most important things to keep in mind when you are a student on a tour of some kind is to always stick together with another student or group of students. Traveling alone as a student can be a risky proposition; there truly is safety in numbers. Also, it is more fun to experience and see new and exciting things with other people, especially with fellow students and friends of yours. Particularly if you are heading out at night in a strange town, make absolutely sure that you have other people with you, and that you inform whoever is in charge of exactly where you are going.

Another valuable tip for student travel is to never keep a lot of money on your person. This holds true for any kind of traveler, really; it is one of the first things that I ever learned when I first started traveling. With today’s modern technology, there is truly no need to keep cash handy when traveling - even if you are in a foreign land. In years past, it was necessary to bring currency and have it exchanged into the denominations of the country you were traveling in. Today, though, many credit cards work worldwide. Also, traveler’s checks are excellent alternatives to cash.

Eating healthy is extremely important during your travels.  When you’re young and on the go it’s extremely tempting to bounce from fast food joint to fast food joint to satisfy your hunger cravings.  But all the extra grease and sugar will slow you down and make you feel sluggish over time.  Keep healthy snacks on you when on long hikes, and when you do decide to pop into a restaurant for a bite, try to pick healthy salads or sandwiches, they’ll give you more energy in the end and you’ll feel better in general.  Your body will thank you!

When you are traveling as a student, make sure that you figure out an itinerary that will ensure you are able to see everything you really want. Plan out your explorations so that you can see as many places in as efficient a manner as possible. Traveling on foot around a big city is generally the best way to really take advantage of the many cultural and historic sights that are sure to beckon you and your traveling companions. Make sure to bring a good variety of detailed and durable maps that you can use to easily navigate your way around in strange places.

Finally, one of the most important tips I can give when it comes to student travel is to take lots of pictures - and have fun! Exploring the world is one of the most interesting things you can do in your life, and can really broaden your horizons and help add great depth and dimension to your education. Traveling is an excellent way to really get a better understanding of the world; make sure that you enjoy yourself and make t he most of your travels.
