Vienna of My Dreams

BLAME IT ON KEROUAC

The lure of travel, and making it a career, is something that I attribute to great books. Seeing Vienna and all the city has to offer was truly inspiring, and that inspiration was heavily influenced by its writers.

The Vienna of the written word is varied, to say the least. The romanticized notion of this incredible city is indelibly marked in our minds, not just by the wordsmith, but filmmakers and music.

The Vienna Mozart Orchestra performs scheduled shows until November of this year is also a must-see.

Seeing music performed in period is incredible. This concert series really gave me an opportunity to appreciate classical music as it was meant to be heard.  Vintage instruments amplified through acoustics; costumes of the time; having the opportunity to enjoy it all, in the one-time musical capital of the world, really helped enhance my experience.

ON THE GO

Getting around Vienna is not only surprisingly easy, it’s also great for your health. Perhaps one of the most forward thinking offerings is the free Vienna bike services. The service offers a low fee for bike rental, as well as a free single hour rate. An interesting concept, to say the least, with 58 terminals to rent and the option to return rental anywhere, it is a physical and interactive way to see the sites.

Visiting Vienna is a treat and a trip back in time. Having an appreciation for history can certainly enhance any visit to this wondrous city.

If you are out and about on foot, take a break in the Stadtpark. This park was established in 1862 and is home to a gilded statue of Johann Strauss. You should also make some time to visit the Imperial Palace (Hofburg). The building now houses several museums and was once the home of the Hapsburg Emperors.

Music, politics, and a visit to St. Stephen’s Cathedral (Stephansdom) are also not to be missed. Take the tour  of the catacombs underneath the church. You’ll be happy you did.

Visiting the Goulash Museum, (not far from St. Stephens Square) is definitely a treat for the stomach. With over 20 different goulashes to choose from, it gave me the hearty reminiscence of home. Food has a way of evoking a time and a place and like many other of my journeys, tasting my way through Vienna was a real treat for my taste buds.
